Judge Orders Trump to Halt Taxpayer-Funded Ads

U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon in New York has issued an order for President Donald Trump to halt all remaining taxpayer-funded television commercials promoting his political message. The judge sided with a coalition, including the non-partisan watchdog Common Cause, which argued that the ads were an improper use of funds. The temporary restraining order requires the administration to cancel any upcoming ads, including those set to air on Sunday night.

According to the ruling, the administration is prohibited from entering into new agreements for the development, creation, or airing of the contested advertisements during the two-week period of the order. The Justice Department had argued against the necessity of the restraining order, stating that the contentious conduct would cease the following day.

The Department of Homeland Security allocated $20 million in taxpayer money for the ads, drawing criticism from legal experts who believe the ads violate federal statutes prohibiting the use of congressionally appropriated funds for “publicity or propaganda.” The funds for the ads were part of a $175 million package from Congress for Trump’s immigration enforcement initiatives.

While the White House has defended the ads as public service announcements in line with past administrations, critics note that these ads are distinct as they do not aim to inform the public about government programs. One of the ads closely resembles a campaign ad from Trump’s 2024 re-election bid.
