“Comedian Liz Miele Struggles After SiriusXM Channel Cut”

Comedian Liz Miele has recently faced a significant financial setback, mirroring the struggles of numerous other comedians following SiriusXM’s decision to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel. This channel, which previously showcased over 800 comics on a rotating basis, has now been replaced by a new channel overseen by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

The elimination of the Raw Comedy channel has resulted in a loss of income and exposure for Miele and many other working-class comedians, with established celebrity comics now dominating the platform. Miele emphasized the vital role SiriusXM played in supporting comedians, enabling them to sustain themselves financially. The abrupt change has left many comedians, including those balancing caregiving responsibilities and life milestones, struggling to make ends meet.

Despite assurances from Maniscalco and SiriusXM about providing opportunities for comedians at various career stages, industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup highlights a stark disparity. The revamped channel featured only 275 comedians in the past month, with the top 50 artists receiving the majority of airplay and earnings. This shift towards a concentration of wealth within a select group of comedians has left many others, who previously relied on royalties from the channel, facing financial uncertainty.

Canadian comedians, such as Toronto-based Danish Anwar, have also felt the impact of this change, experiencing a significant drop in their monthly royalties. Anwar noted the critical role these royalties played in sustaining many comedians’ careers, particularly those navigating the challenges of working in the U.S. and securing visas.

The decision to restructure the comedy channel has sparked outcry from comedians and fans alike, with calls for a more inclusive platform that supports emerging talents. While Maniscalco has distanced himself from the channel’s overhaul, pledging to create space for diverse voices in comedy, the repercussions for many comedians remain palpable.

Amidst the uncertainty, comedians like Steph Tolev are urging solidarity and collective action within the industry to address issues of fair pay and treatment. The upheaval caused by SiriusXM’s decision underscores the need for a united front to advocate for the rights and livelihoods of comedians impacted by these changes.
