Dr. Kasim Ahmed has discussed a health issue resembling ‘sunburn in your stomach’ and provided advice on how to deal with it. The NHS doctor and former participant on The Traitors shared his insights on a segment of BBC Morning Live recently.
According to Dr. Ahmed, gastritis is stomach inflammation, distinct from the more commonly known gastroenteritis which causes stomach bugs with symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting. He likened gastritis to chronic inflammation inside the stomach, likening it to sunburn on the skin due to constant irritation from food consumption.
While occasional bloating or indigestion after meals is common, Dr. Ahmed suggested consulting a GP if symptoms persist. Symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, excessive burping, and flatulence could indicate stomach wall irritation.
Dr. Ahmed highlighted that certain foods can exacerbate gastritis, including spicy dishes, carbonated drinks, fatty fried foods, acidic juices, and alcohol. Bacterial infections like Helicobacter pylori can also lead to severe gastritis if left untreated.
Treatment for bacterial-induced gastritis may involve antibiotics or other medications to reduce inflammation. Dr. Ahmed recommended consuming foods like bananas, yogurt, oats, and high-fiber snacks to alleviate symptoms, emphasizing that individual responses may vary.
Additional NHS recommendations for managing gastritis include reducing caffeine intake, elevating the head during sleep to prevent acid reflux, weight management, and consulting a doctor before taking anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or aspirin.
Untreated gastritis can progress to stomach ulcers, warranting a referral to a gastroenterologist for further evaluation, potentially including a gastroscopy procedure. For more information, visit the NHS website.
