In a significant development, the Emmy Awards will be transitioning to Prime Video starting from 2027 under a new six-year deal inked between Amazon and the Television Academy. This move marks the conclusion of a seven-decade tradition where broadcast networks have been the exclusive hosts of the prestigious ceremony.
The agreement, disclosed recently, signifies a shift towards streaming platforms, which have gained prominence in the top categories at the Emmys. Since 1955, the awards show has been broadcast on one of the four major networks annually. The transition to a single long-term home, commencing from next September’s awards, represents a major shift in approach.
“The concept of continuity is paramount for us, as the previous rotational format often meant starting from scratch each year,” shared Cris Abrego, the Television Academy’s chairman. “Having a sole partner for six years allows us to grow and evolve together.”
Notably, the Emmy Awards will remain accessible to viewers at no cost, adhering to the Academy’s stipulation to retain its free-to-air nature. No subscription to Prime Video will be necessary for viewing the ceremony.
Drawing parallels with the Oscars, whose exclusive streaming deal with YouTube was announced in 2025, the Emmy’s collaboration with Prime Video takes effect immediately. Despite a decline in viewership across various award shows due to changing viewing habits, the Emmys continue to attract a sizable audience, albeit reduced from its peak years.
Amazon and the Academy expressed optimism that Prime Video’s platform could potentially rejuvenate viewership figures by offering a convenient hub for Emmy-related content. This includes acclaimed shows like “Widow’s Bay” and “The Studio,” winners of recent Emmys, which are available for streaming on Prime Video through its partnership with Apple TV.
While acknowledging the significance of the streaming transition, Abrego emphasized that the quality of content remains paramount irrespective of the delivery method. He stressed that the Academy’s focus is on recognizing excellence regardless of the screen or platform.
Looking ahead, the Emmy Awards will maintain its traditional slot in September 2027, with possibilities for flexibility in future scheduling. Abrego noted that discussions with Amazon have left the door open for potential date changes as the partnership evolves.
