“Chris Alexander Withdraws from Toronto Mayoral Race”

Former Conservative Member of Parliament Chris Alexander has withdrawn from the race for Toronto’s next mayor. Alexander expressed that his decision to run was a serious one, emphasizing that he believes the other contenders for the city’s top position lack fiscal responsibility, ambition, and detailed plans. He voiced concerns about the city’s future, stating, “In another four years, we may find ourselves in a worse situation.” Alexander stressed the importance of turning political ideas into actions during his campaign.

Recent polling data from Mainstreet Research revealed Alexander trailing in third place with only 7.2% support, while incumbent Olivia Chow led with 38% and Coun. Brad Bradford followed with 32%. Alexander had entered the race on July 29, aiming to steer the city back on track.

Prior to his political career, Alexander served in Canada’s foreign service and was the first resident Canadian ambassador to Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005. As the MP for Ajax–Pickering from 2011 to 2015, he also held the position of federal immigration minister in Stephen Harper’s government from 2013 to 2015. Notably, Alexander introduced the barbaric cultural practices bill in 2014 to address issues like honour killings, child marriages, and polygamy.

With Alexander’s exit, the mayoral race in Toronto now includes 52 candidates. The full list of candidates can be found on the city’s official website.
