Ontario Member of Parliament and former contender for the Conservative leadership, Scott Aitchison, announced on Wednesday his plan to step down from his position at the conclusion of the fall parliamentary session. In a social media post, Aitchison expressed his readiness for a new phase in his life after three decades of public service.
Having served as the Mayor of Huntsville, Ontario, prior to becoming the MP for Parry Sound–Muskoka in 2019, Aitchison did not disclose his future plans but took a moment to reflect on his tenure in public office, expressing gratitude towards his constituents and staff. He highlighted his efforts in fostering consensus, navigating bureaucracy, and enhancing the lives of those who entrusted him with their support.
Media reports had previously indicated Aitchison’s intention to resign in the fall, a fact subsequently confirmed by CTV News. Aitchison’s bid for the Conservative leadership during the 2022 campaign, culminating in Pierre Poilievre’s selection as party leader, where he secured the fifth position, was noted. Particularly noteworthy in his leadership campaign was his emphasis on housing, leading to his appointment as the party’s housing critic by Poilievre.
In his farewell statement, Aitchison acknowledged the collective efforts across all levels of government to address housing affordability challenges arising from over-regulation and excessive taxes. He commended the Conservative team for its work in this area and expressed confidence in their continued efforts post his departure. Aitchison extended his appreciation to his caucus colleagues and Party Leader Pierre Poilievre, recognizing their dedication to improving affordability for Canadians nationwide.
The current parliamentary session is set to continue until December 11.
