Former Manitoba Progressive Conservative leader Obby Khan expressed disappointment with the party’s defense of its integrity following an unexpected move by caucus members to push him out. Despite some members advising him not to step down just days earlier, Khan announced his resignation as Tory leader after just over a year in the position. He will now serve as an Independent in the legislature, representing the Fort Whyte riding.
Khan cited internal divisions within the caucus as the primary reason for his resignation, emphasizing the lack of unity within the party. He revealed that a confidence vote on his leadership was held last Friday, where a motion was put forward by Agassiz MLA Jodie Byram and seconded by Selkirk MLA Richard Perchotte. The vote showed 13 members in favor of Khan remaining as leader and six opposed, with one MLA absent.
Regarding the events leading to his resignation, Khan mentioned conversations with Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen, who warned against the repercussions of removing him as leader. Several caucus members, including Kathleen Cook, Lauren Stone, and Carrie Hiebert, spoke out against Khan during the meeting, raising concerns about caucus operations rather than policy issues.
Khan expressed his disappointment with the lack of trust within the team, especially after some caucus members had encouraged him to stay on as leader while plotting against him behind his back. He acknowledged the need for change within the party but believed that unity was essential for its success.
Despite the challenges he faced, Khan remained grateful for the support he received from certain caucus members and emphasized the importance of standing by his principles. He acknowledged the loss of friendships during this tumultuous period but expressed relief at moving past the internal party drama.
Looking ahead, Khan hoped to impart a valuable lesson to his son about standing firm on principles. He also mentioned receiving messages from political parties across Canada, noting the absence of communication from the NDP.
