The parents of a young NHL prospect from Ontario who collapsed during a team workout and is now in critical condition remain hopeful, describing their son as resilient. Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old Hamilton native, was participating in a morning workout with the Arizona State University (ASU) hockey team on August 20 when the incident occurred.
Before the sudden collapse, Matthew was reportedly in good health, according to his mother, Christina. However, he is currently fighting for his life in a hospital bed, as stated by the family’s lawyer.
The situation has garnered attention in the sports community, with the Professional Hockey Players’ Association addressing concerns about the safety of young athletes. The association’s executive director, Brian Ramsay, emphasized the importance of athletes’ well-being and the need for a system that prioritizes health over career pressures.
Matthew, a talented hockey player, had a promising career ahead of him. He began playing hockey at a young age and excelled in various teams, including the Ottawa 67’s and the St. Louis Blues.
