Russia has issued a direct threat to utilize nuclear weapons against the UK and mainland Europe. Sergey Karaganov, who leads Russia’s Council for Foreign and Defense Policy, stated that if Russia faces defeat in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin would resort to nuclear weapons, resulting in Europe’s physical destruction. Karaganov criticized his government for showing excessive patience towards Europe and expressed the need for severe punishment if Europe continues to support the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Karaganov dismissed the idea of a Russian defeat as a “fantastic illusion” and criticized European leadership for what he described as “intellectual incapacity.” He remarked on the diminishing global influence of Europe, attributing it to intellectual degradation since 1968.
The escalating global tensions are evident as the UK deploys a military officer to Greenland following Denmark’s increased military presence in the Arctic and High North. Denmark’s defense minister emphasized the unpredictability of future events and the need for allied countries to cooperate in the region.
In response to President Trump’s concerns about High North security, the UK and other NATO nations are enhancing their presence in the area to deter Russian aggression and Chinese activities. Germany, Sweden, Norway, and France have confirmed their participation in the joint mission to strengthen regional security and operational capabilities in the Arctic.
President Trump’s persistent calls for the US to take control of Greenland have raised alarms, with his administration even threatening to use force to annex the territory. This has sparked apprehension about the future of the transatlantic alliance amidst heightened geopolitical tensions.
