Rick Hansen once viewed his wheelchair as a symbol of limitations before embracing it as a tool for mobility and freedom. Embarking on the Man in Motion Tour on March 21, 1985, Hansen aimed to showcase the strength and athleticism of individuals with disabilities. Over 26 months, he wheeled across 34 countries and 40,000 kilometers, raising $26 million. A documentary, “Man in Motion: The Rick Hansen Story,” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, marking 40 years since the tour’s completion.
Hansen’s advocacy shifted towards promoting accessibility rather than focusing on walking again. Despite his spinal cord injury, Hansen found fulfillment in his life and work, distinguishing himself from others like Christopher Reeve.
