Newly obtained search warrant documents have revealed that a driver was arrested this year in connection with a human smuggling scheme that resulted in the tragic deaths of a family of four in Manitoba in 2022. The investigations shed light on the reasons behind the prolonged duration of the case.
It has been almost five years since the bodies of Jagdish Patel (39), his wife Vaishali (37), and their children, 11-year-old Vihangi and three-year-old Dharmik, were discovered near the U.S. border in Manitoba. The family had attempted to cross into Minnesota but got separated from a larger group of migrants.
According to RCMP search warrant documents obtained by CBC News, the unnamed driver arrested in February 2026 is believed to have facilitated the transportation of the Patels and other migrants to Winnipeg before their ill-fated journey to the border. The ongoing investigation aims to determine whether they will be witnesses or face prosecution in Canada or the United States.
While a Canadian “person of interest,” Fenil Patel, was arrested last year in connection with organizing the smuggling operation, no charges have been laid in Canada. The investigation progress has been hindered by resource challenges and competing priorities within the border-related cases unit in Manitoba.
The delays have also been attributed to staffing issues and deployments to the border initiated in January 2025 due to increased attention from the new U.S. President. The search warrant documents provide insights into the activities leading up to the Patel family’s deaths and mention potential unidentified co-conspirators.
As part of the investigation, RCMP obtained over 40 warrants for various records, including bank transactions and phone logs. Details from individuals who interacted with the Patels in their final days, such as hotel managers and acquaintances, were crucial to the inquiry.
The documents also revealed that the Patels were in Canada on a visitor’s visa, with other migrants using fraudulent documents to obtain permits. Additionally, it was noted that Fenil Patel had been booking hotel rooms for Indian students dating back to 2018.
Fenil Patel remains in Canadian custody and is set to appear in court for his extradition case. Two individuals were convicted in the U.S. for their involvement in the smuggling operation, receiving lengthy prison sentences.
The investigation continues as authorities strive to piece together the events leading to the tragic deaths and bring those responsible to justice.
