Diana Fox Carney, the wife of Prime Minister Mark Carney, has taken on an unpaid position focused on promoting ocean conservation efforts. In her role as the country’s ocean envoy, Fox Carney aims to bolster Canada’s standing in ocean conservation, climate action, Indigenous leadership, economic resilience, and maritime security. She will also lead the 12th annual Our Ocean Conference, a global event that brings together governments, organizations, and scholars to address contemporary ocean-related challenges, scheduled to be held in Halifax next year.
Minister of Fisheries Joanne Thompson expressed optimism about Canada’s opportunity to exhibit leadership in various ocean-related areas at the upcoming conference. The event is considered crucial in Ottawa’s pledge to safeguard 30% of the nation’s marine and coastal regions by 2030. Fox Carney highlighted the conference’s significance in fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and securing commitments to ensure sustainable oceans for future generations.
Fox Carney, known for her background in economics and environmental advocacy, has been actively engaged in various non-profit organizations and held influential positions at reputable think tanks in Canada and the U.K., advocating for environmental causes and income equality. Notably, she sparked debate in 2013 with a paper on carbon pricing published by the Canada 2020 think tank. Recently, in 2021, she embarked on a new role as a senior adviser at the Eurasia Group, a global political research and advisory firm serving businesses and policymakers worldwide.
