In its debut full month, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, linking Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, witnessed over 340,000 crossings, as per the latest data. In August, there were 343,507 crossings at the bridge, almost equivalent to the traffic at the nearby Ambassador Bridge, which recorded 345,445 crossings during the same period.
However, the breakdown of traffic between the two bridges varied significantly. The Gordie Howe bridge had a majority of passenger vehicles, with nearly 270,000 crossings compared to around 74,000 trucks. Conversely, the Ambassador Bridge saw approximately 150,000 truck crossings and 196,000 passenger car crossings.
According to Jason Miller, a supply chain management expert at Michigan State University, many trucking companies have existing toll contracts with the Ambassador Bridge, which explains the hesitance to shift trucks to the Gordie Howe bridge without renegotiated terms.
The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel remained the busiest in terms of passenger vehicles, with roughly 280,000 crossings in August. Recent Statistics Canada data provided a detailed breakdown of cross-border travel patterns, highlighting the usage of the Gordie Howe Bridge for Canadian and US resident return trips.
Statistics Canada’s report also revealed that 34,800 commercial transport trucks entered Canada via the Gordie Howe Bridge last month. Traffic dynamics are expected to evolve in the coming months as the novelty of the new bridge fades, emphasizing the necessity for an additional crossing point.
As traffic patterns adjust, the focus shifts towards ensuring smoother commercial flows and reduced wait times at both bridges for enhanced efficiency in cross-border trade.
