Wilfrid Laurier University in southern Ontario is currently investigating the vandalism of two Jewish prayer scrolls during the Rosh Hashanah holiday. Rabbi Moshe Goldman, from Waterloo’s Rohr Chabad Centre for Jewish Life, expressed disappointment over the incident, labeling it as a hindrance to their positive efforts.
The damaged items, known as mezuzahs, hold sacred inscriptions from the Torah and are typically affixed to Jewish households’ doorways. Waterloo Regional Police Service acknowledged the situation and reviewed evidence, though the investigation is within the university’s jurisdiction.
In response, the university released a statement condemning antisemitism and affirming their commitment to student safety. Following the incident, affected students contacted Rabbi Goldman, leading to a collaborative effort to reinstall the mezuzahs with the help of Dean Adam Lawrence and other students.
Rabbi Goldman highlighted the intimidation and fear experienced by Jewish students in the wake of such incidents, noting the growing concerns of antisemitism on university campuses. An August national report revealed a high percentage of Jewish students reporting or witnessing antisemitic incidents.
Additionally, the Snapshot of Hate Report documented a rise in hate incidents in the Waterloo region in 2025. Rabbi Goldman emphasized the impact of such acts on the Jewish community and urged for respect and tolerance.
Despite the vandalism, the community rallied together, with an outpouring of support leading to new mezuzah requests and a generous donation towards replacements. Rabbi Goldman emphasized the resilience of the community, emphasizing unity in the face of adversity.
