“PM Carney Unveils $1 Trillion Investment Showcase”

A variety of investment opportunities, including a floating LNG terminal off the coast of British Columbia, a high-speed rail line connecting Edmonton and Calgary, and a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Ocean, will be presented by Prime Minister Mark Carney at an upcoming investment summit in Toronto. These possibilities, detailed in a 66-page prospectus obtained by CBC News, highlight the diverse investment prospects that Ottawa and Canadian business leaders aim to showcase during the September 14-15 event.

The investment summit, organized by the prime minister in collaboration with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Public Sector Pension Investment Board, seeks to attract a total of $1 trillion in investments from international investors and Canadian business leaders. Notably, invitations have been extended to major global investment firms and sovereign wealth funds in an effort to secure capital amid trade uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.

The prospectus categorizes the investment pitches into eight sectors, encompassing conventional and clean energy projects, mining and metals ventures, marine and port infrastructure developments, power and utilities initiatives, digital technology innovations, advanced manufacturing endeavors, and transportation projects. Each pitch outlines the project’s current status, required capital expenditure, and the type of investment needed for successful implementation.

Some of the notable projects include a $57 billion US expansion of the Port of Churchill, a $44 billion investment in Nova Scotia’s Wind West offshore wind project, a proposed $35 billion West Coast Oil Pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia, and the $28.5 billion Ksi Lisims LNG terminal project. Additionally, there are plans for a float glass manufacturing facility in Manitoba, manufacturing capacity expansions for defense-related night-vision technology, and Earth observation satellite technology, among others.

However, certain projects such as the Alto high-speed rail project between Toronto and Quebec City and potential airport privatization plans have not been included in the prospectus. The document also highlights the varying stages of readiness for different projects, ranging from fully permitted and shovel-ready to those in the preliminary stages of assessment.

Furthermore, the prospectus outlines a $10.9 billion proposal for a high-speed rail line linking Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, as well as a $35 billion oil pipeline project to connect Alberta crude production to a deepwater export terminal in southern British Columbia. It also includes a $2.1 billion US plan for Calgary-based South Bow’s Prairie Connector pipeline expansion, utilizing parts of the previously abandoned Keystone XL pipeline.

In the realm of natural gas, a $28.5 billion pitch for the floating Ksi Lisims LNG export facility on the British Columbia coast is presented to diversify Canada’s energy export market beyond the United States. The document also promotes clean energy projects, such as nuclear power generation in New Brunswick, carbon capture initiatives in Saskatchewan, and wind power and green hydrogen projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Moreover, the prospectus positions Canada as a leader in artificial intelligence, offering investment opportunities in data centers, quantum computing technologies, and other AI-related ventures. The document underscores the country’s commitment to innovation and sustainability across various industries, aiming to attract significant investments to drive economic growth and technological advancement.
