On rehearsal day for the theatrical production “When the World Stopped” by Nomad Stages, artists and performers gather at the Arts and Culture Centre stage in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador. This musical and play is a poignant portrayal of the local impact of 9/11, curated by Louann Davis, the artistic director of Nomad Stages.
Following the success of “Come from Away,” which focused on Gander’s narrative, Davis felt compelled to showcase Stephenville’s unique story. The production, coinciding with the 25th anniversary, features vignettes illustrating the experiences of individuals affected by the events of 9/11, particularly the response to stranded passengers.
Denise Ryan, a performer with Nomad Stages, recalls her personal encounter during that fateful day while working at a nursery school. The play vividly captures moments like teachers and students observing planes landing through classroom windows, reflecting the community’s shared emotions and memories.
Scheduled for performances on September 11th and 12th at the Stephenville Arts and Culture Centre, “When the World Stopped” aims to evoke a sense of community pride. Stephenville played a pivotal role on 9/11, witnessing multiple flight diversions due to adverse weather conditions, with the airport prepared for a significant influx of aircraft.
Mayor Bob Byrnes emphasizes Stephenville’s enduring connection with the American military, citing past events like Harmon Field Day where military aircraft frequently landed in the town. With a rich history as the former Ernest Harmon Air Force Base, Stephenville remains a symbol of international cooperation and support during times of crisis.
The town’s hospitality towards stranded passengers, with accommodations provided by locals and organizations, reflects Stephenville’s compassionate response during the aftermath of 9/11. Commemorative events, such as the upcoming service hosted by the Knights of Columbus, serve as poignant reminders of the solemnity and unity experienced during those challenging times.
