Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and Indonesia’s Janice Tjen were defeated 6-4, 6-4 by New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe and Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi in the second round of women’s doubles action at the U.S. Open on Saturday. Fernandez and Tjen managed one ace but struggled with six double faults and only capitalized on one out of their six break-point opportunities. In contrast, the ninth-seeded Routliffe and Sutjiadi recorded one ace, two double faults, and successfully broke serve on three out of five chances.
Fernandez, hailing from Laval, Quebec, faced elimination in the third round of women’s singles on Friday after falling to third-seeded American Jessica Pegula. Following the exits of Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime, the Canadian representation in the tennis Grand Slam event has come to an end.
