A Mexican court recently issued warrants for the arrest of a British national, Harry Robinson, and a Mexican national, Jacqueline Herrera Herrera, for allegedly defrauding a Canadian couple of their retirement savings in a condo-flip scheme. The warrants were issued in late July by a Quintana Roo state court judge. Despite efforts to challenge the warrants in a Mexican federal court, the criminal case against them at the state level will proceed.
The state prosecutor’s office has accused Robinson and Herrera of committing fraud through deception. The victims, Cindy Thompson and Glenn Brown from Curve Lake, Ontario, sent $280,000 to a company co-owned by the suspects, who promised significant returns on a condo investment in Playa del Carmen that never materialized.
Thompson and Brown lodged a criminal complaint against Robinson and Herrera earlier this year. The incident dates back to late 2024 when Thompson, exploring real estate opportunities in Mexico, encountered XMEX Investments, a company operated by Robinson. After sending $170,000 for a one-bedroom condo that was never delivered, Thompson and Brown were persuaded by Robinson to invest an additional $110,000 in a deal to flip seven condos, which ultimately resulted in the disappearance of their money.
While a federal court judge has temporarily halted the arrest warrant against Herrera, legal proceedings are ongoing to dismiss it. A hearing regarding Robinson’s case is scheduled for September 8 in Cancun. Herrera has alleged that Robinson misappropriated some of the funds, while Robinson filed a complaint accusing Herrera of stealing all the money in late 2025.
Efforts to seek comments from Robinson and Herrera’s legal representatives were unsuccessful. Herrera, through another lawyer, offered a cash settlement to Thompson in early August, which was declined. Thompson expressed frustration with navigating the complexities of the Mexican judicial system and the uncertainties surrounding the case, stating her hopes for a resolution while acknowledging the challenges of being distanced from the proceedings.
