As the upcoming academic year approaches, families and students are in the midst of purchasing new school supplies. However, a particular classroom essential has sparked controversy in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Hilroy Canada exercise books are renowned for featuring a map of Canada on their cover. In a recent glossy version of the notebook, the map includes some omissions, notably excluding Newfoundland and Cape Breton.
Upon receiving one of the books from CBC News, Victor Aucoin, an educator, initially appreciated the design but upon closer examination, he humorously inquired, “Where’s Newfoundland?” expressing disbelief. He further remarked, “There’s no Newfoundland. Oh, so we don’t exist in Canada, OK! That’s nice to see,” shaking his head in disappointment.
Aucoin highlighted the economic significance of the province to the nation, emphasizing his refusal to purchase these books. He expressed his intention to urge parents and students to contact Hilroy to voice their concerns, stating, “I will as well.” Additionally, he noted his Cape Breton roots, humorously mentioning his mother’s reaction to the omission.
Describing the situation as unacceptable, Aucoin stated his plans to reach out to the company and demand the removal of the new exercise books from circulation, declaring, “This is an uproar.”
The release date of the design remains uncertain. Despite efforts to reach ACCO Brands, the parent company of Hilroy, for comment, there has been no response as of publication.
Johnathan Goodyear, another individual reviewing the design, expressed astonishment at the absence of Newfoundland and called for a recall of the exercise books, labeling the situation as “bananas.” He highlighted the significant contributions of Newfoundland and Labrador to Canada, particularly in the military sector, underscoring the perceived impact of the exclusion on students’ understanding of the country’s geography.
Rose Wilkinson echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of including Newfoundland on the cover to raise awareness about the province’s location within Canada. She expressed concerns that many individuals may not recognize Newfoundland as part of the country due to its size.
Dace Gruchy, initially impressed by the vibrant colors of the new design, criticized the absence of Newfoundland, describing it as “mad disrespectful” and asserting, “We should be on this ’cause we’re part of Canada.”
The omission of Newfoundland and Cape Breton from the map has raised apprehensions about the potential educational implications for students regarding the country’s geography.
