Canada’s rising star, Leylah Fernandez, advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open after a convincing victory in the opening round of the women’s singles event. The talented player from Laval, Quebec, outplayed China’s Shuai Zhang with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday.
Fernandez, seeded 31st, showcased her skills with a balanced performance, delivering four aces while facing three double faults. She capitalized on three out of seven break-point opportunities and impressively saved all seven break-point chances presented by Zhang, who struggled to match Fernandez’s level of play, recording no aces and just one double fault.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles competition, Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ontario, displayed a strong performance against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic. Shapovalov secured victory with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, relying on his powerful serve that produced 19 aces. However, he also struggled with 11 double faults but managed to break Kecmanovic’s serve six times out of 14 opportunities.
Both Canadian players demonstrated their competitive spirit and determination in their respective matches, setting a positive tone for their U.S. Open campaigns.
