Jake Reiner has experienced a paradoxical sense of time since December 14, 2025, where moments feel like both eternity and fleeting instances. Speaking with Mark Cota-Robles from KABC-TV in his first interview following the tragic incident, Jake reflected on the last eight months since his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, were tragically killed in their Los Angeles residence. Shortly after the discovery, their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was apprehended and later charged with their murders.
In the emotional interview released on Thursday, Jake recounted receiving a distressing call from his sister, Romy, informing him of their father’s death and their mother’s disappearance. This news left him in a state of shock and disbelief.
Nick was formally charged on July 20 with two counts of first-degree murder related to the deaths of his renowned filmmaker and activist father, Rob Reiner, and his mother, Michele, a photographer and producer. Despite the charges, Nick pleaded not guilty. The indictment, unveiled on August 12 by the LA County grand jury, alleged that Nick, who had a well-documented history of mental health issues and addiction struggles, had premeditated the attack on his parents.
In a joint effort in 2016, Rob and Nick Reiner collaborated on a film titled “Being Charlie,” inspired by Nick’s own battles with addiction. The movie, depicting the story of a rebellious addict son of a politician father, was a deeply personal project for both father and son, bringing them closer together during its production.
During the recent interview, Jake reiterated his sentiments of feeling like he has lost half of his family, especially with Nick’s incarceration, expressing a mix of emotions towards his brother. He shared his struggles in comprehending the tragedy, feeling anger, and helplessness at the lack of control over the situation. Jake emphasized the overwhelming sense of acceptance and frustration he grapples with in the wake of the devastating loss.
