American climber Mallory Geis found deceased in Pakistan avalanche

Search teams have located the remains of American climber Mallory Geis, the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering group that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago, as confirmed by a mountaineering official and local authorities on Friday. The discovery of Geis’s remains was made by a team of local volunteers, led by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural endeavor to scale an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.

Residing in San Antonio, Texas, Geis, aged 39, had revealed on social media earlier this year her decision to shut down her Pilates studio and venture “into the unknown to explore life’s path.” Her family honored her memory in a recent statement, describing her as “a radiant presence cherished deeply by her loved ones and friends.”

The search operation, initiated on July 31 following the tragic avalanche that engulfed the team led by the acclaimed climber Nirmal Purja on Broad Peak, has now concluded with the recovery of Geis’s remains. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier of Nepali descent, gained global recognition for scaling the world’s 14 highest peaks in a remarkable 189 days back in 2019, a feat immortalized in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” His record was surpassed in 2023.

Incidents like this are not uncommon during climbing expeditions in the northern regions of Pakistan due to risks such as avalanches, falling ice and rock, high altitudes, and unpredictable weather conditions.
