Nearly four years ago, Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a routine. At the suggestion of her brother, she turned to her passion for K-pop and the globally renowned boy band BTS to create BTS Army Toronto. The fan club, named after the larger BTS fan base known as the “army,” organizes events and meet-ups to connect fans who share a love for the South Korean group.
Following the establishment of BTS Army Toronto, Vann faced the loss of her brother. Despite her grief, the 43-year-old dedicated herself to expanding the fan club into a vibrant community that hosts numerous fans at gatherings, arranges giveaways and fundraisers, and advocates for local Korean businesses.
As BTS prepares for their highly anticipated return to Toronto after over ten years, Vann, along with her 24-year-old son Jordan Vann and a team of about 10 individuals, is excited about the upcoming concerts. The fan club is thrilled to welcome BTS to Rogers Stadium for two sold-out shows as part of their Arirang World Tour.
The passion of BTS fans, known as the “army,” stems from the band’s emotional connection through their music, exploring themes like mental health, self-love, and personal growth. Vann, a real estate agent turned entrepreneur with her venture Idol Konnect, credits BTS for their meaningful lyrics and artistic depth, aiming to make a positive impact through their music.
Before the current tour, BTS members completed mandatory military service, leading to a hiatus. As the only Canadian stop on their global tour, Toronto fans are eagerly anticipating the group’s performances, showcasing their unwavering support for BTS.
From humble beginnings in 2013, BTS has risen to become international icons, with achievements like their Billboard-topping English song “Dynamite.” The group’s latest album, “ARIRANG,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking a significant milestone in their career.
As fans gear up for the Toronto concerts, the excitement is palpable, with the city honoring BTS by temporarily renaming part of Yonge Street as “BTS Boulevard.” Fans have flocked to the official BTS merchandise store, eagerly purchasing items to commemorate the event.
The anticipation for the concerts has spurred various fan activities, including a booth at the Toronto Korean Festival and pre-show events near the concert venue. Vann is eager for the unique concert experience BTS will deliver, expecting surprises and unforgettable moments to unite the BTS community in Toronto.
Ultimately, Vann looks forward to cherishing the special bond created through BTS’s music and the concert experience, emphasizing the profound impact it has on fans’ lives.
