“Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Faces Start Line Setback”

The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham faced a setback at the starting line. The first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar event in Canada was called off on Friday due to incomplete track construction, leading to the inability to conduct a final safety inspection. Organizers announced plans to accommodate all missed sessions from the first day into the schedule for Saturday.

This year marks the relocation of the event from Toronto’s Exhibition Place to Markham, which is hosting the race for the first time since its inception in 1986. IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment over the delay, citing the significant effort put forth by the team on-site. Despite the challenges, Boles acknowledged the strong support of fans in Ontario.

Long-time attendees Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo from Kitchener and Waterloo, respectively, shared mixed feelings about the postponement. Coburn emphasized the importance of ensuring track safety, while Stobo highlighted the absence of on-track action throughout the day, which impacts fan engagement.

The move of the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham last September. The newly constructed circuit spans between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Notable incomplete features included a pedestrian bridge over Enterprise Boulevard and safety fencing modifications for marshals.

The financial support for the event included a $1.5 million investment from the Ontario government and a $3.5 million contribution from the federal government. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti confirmed significant capital spending exceeding $12 million on infrastructure upgrades for the race.

Friday’s activities at the IndyCar event were free for spectators, with donations encouraged for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Despite the warm weather, Stobo noted the lack of shade and seating options around the Markham track compared to Exhibition Place.

Off-track events, such as autograph sessions with drivers, proceeded as planned on Friday. Saturday’s schedule includes a packed day of practice sessions and qualifying rounds. Boles expressed optimism about the track’s potential and thanked the city of Markham for its support in providing a fast and technical layout for the race.

Additional racing series, including USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series, will also feature races during the weekend at the road course. Stobo indicated that he and others may not return for future events following the challenges faced at this year’s race.
