“Unifor Begins Talks with GM for New Labor Agreement”

Unifor and General Motors have commenced discussions for a new labor agreement, initiating negotiations at a central Toronto bargaining location on Monday. The union represents over 4,600 members at various Ontario GM sites, including the Oshawa assembly plant, CAMI facility in Ingersoll, as well as operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock. Unifor national president Lana Payne and GM Canada’s president and managing director, Jack Uppal, formally began talks by shaking hands.

Seated at opposite ends of a conference room, with Payne in the center and Uppal directly across, both parties expressed their commitment to productive discussions. Payne mentioned the solid groundwork set by the pattern agreement with Ford, emphasizing the importance of addressing company operations and the future of auto jobs at GM in Canada. The union aims to reach a tentative agreement with GM by August 21.

Uppal, in a released statement, conveyed GM’s deep respect for the collective bargaining process and the pivotal role employees play in the company’s achievements. He highlighted GM’s significant investments in Canadian manufacturing plants since 2020, totaling $3.3 billion, which will bolster job security for thousands of Canadians in the years ahead. The company’s objective is to secure a mutually beneficial deal that supports employees while ensuring GM Canada’s long-term competitiveness.

Earlier in July, Unifor members approved a new three-year contract with Ford, featuring annual pay increases and a no-closure agreement. Additional commitments included program enhancements across all Ford facilities, such as a planned third shift at the Essex, Ont., engine plant in 2029. Unifor and Ford also agreed on a program offering laid-off Oakville assembly plant workers a pathway to full employment by July 2027.

Pattern bargaining was a key strategy, with the union negotiating with Ford to establish terms to replicate with other sector companies. The successful negotiations with Ford set a precedent for key gains around wage increases and job security. Payne expressed confidence in the negotiated terms and emphasized the importance of working through challenges collaboratively. However, she acknowledged potential complexities in upcoming talks with General Motors and Stellantis, citing differences in decisions made during recent trade uncertainties.

The ongoing negotiations between Unifor and the Detroit Three automakers occur amid sector challenges, including U.S. tariffs, trade uncertainties, and the emergence of Chinese electric vehicles in Canada. The industry faces headwinds, and Unifor emphasizes the significance of advocating for the automotive sector’s sustainability.
