Canadian director Matt Johnson appeared relaxed only four days before his wedding and eight days prior to commencing filming on his upcoming movie. Johnson, dressed casually in a T-shirt and sweatpants, visited Toronto’s Revue Cinema to discuss “Tony,” a biopic centered on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s status as a beloved figure post his tragic passing in 2018, Johnson approached the task of narrating his story with ease.
Initially disinterested in creating a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective shifted upon meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who embodies the lead role in the movie. The duo shared similar views on various themes, prompting Johnson to delve into exploring these concepts collaboratively.
“Sessa and I had a mutual understanding on certain issues, particularly regarding role models and the facade of adulthood,” Johnson explained. “This presented an excellent opportunity for us to delve into these aspects together.”
The film, drawing inspiration from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” condenses anecdotes from Bourdain’s youth into a narrative portraying one summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain worked as a chef for the first time. By focusing on the younger Bourdain, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of replicating the image of the more mature and established Bourdain that many revered fans recognized.
“Kitchen Confidential provided a framework to explore the complexities of Bourdain’s early life, including his relationships with family and peers as he navigated adulthood,” Johnson remarked.
The collaborative effort between Johnson, Sessa, and the spirit of Bourdain infused authenticity and relatability into the storytelling, making the movie more engaging for audiences.
“Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on Friday, August 14, offering viewers a unique perspective on the formative years of the iconic chef and author.
