Billionaire Mike Ashley, known for his interest in struggling retailers, has shown interest in acquiring Harvey Nichols, a renowned luxury department store facing financial challenges. Ashley, the owner of Sports Direct, revealed that turning around Harvey Nichols would pose a significant challenge due to its current state, which he described as a “death spiral.”
Harvey Nichols, featured prominently in the BBC sitcom “Absolutely Fabulous,” has experienced a series of financial losses over the years. The department store, with branches in various cities including London, Leeds, Birmingham, and Dublin, underwent a major operational restructuring two years ago that led to staff layoffs at its headquarters.
Frasers Group, led by self-made tycoon Mike Ashley, is considering a potential acquisition of Harvey Nichols, with reports also suggesting interest from fashion giant Next. In an interview with the Financial Times, Ashley hinted at a potential acquisition price below £40 million, expressing confidence in the fit between Harvey Nichols and his existing retail portfolio.
If Frasers Group successfully acquires Harvey Nichols, Ashley indicated plans to retain the flagship store in London and the Edinburgh branch under the Harvey Nichols brand. However, he proposed rebranding some other stores as either House of Fraser or Flannels, brands within the Frasers Group.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by department stores, Ashley highlighted the high maintenance costs associated with such properties. He emphasized his commitment to sustainable business practices, citing his reluctance to invest in ventures that may incur ongoing losses. Additionally, he mentioned Lillywhites, a sports store in London acquired in 2002, as part of his diverse business holdings.
