A lorry driver was left with a severe facial injury that required nine stitches after a funeral turned into a chaotic brawl involving a father and his two sons. The incident unfolded at a wake held at a golf club following the funeral service on October 17, 2024.
The family, known as the Redmonds from Holm Lane in Prenton, Wirral, were involved in the altercation, which saw them hurling pint glasses and engaging in violent behavior towards other mourners. Liverpool Crown Court heard that the father, who had a history of violence at memorial gatherings, along with his sons, caused a scene that led to physical altercations and injuries.
Witnesses described the defendants as inappropriately dressed for the occasion, and the atmosphere at the wake turned hostile after last orders were called. The situation escalated with shouting and physical confrontations, resulting in multiple individuals being caught in the chaos.
During the brawl, one of the sons allegedly threw a pint glass, injuring the golf course manager and causing her to seek hospital treatment. Witnesses recounted instances of the Redmonds engaging in violent behavior, including gouging at the eyes of other attendees and causing harm to several individuals.
The aftermath of the incident left one man with a split nose and the lorry driver with a permanent scar on his face, as well as fragments of glass in his eye. The victims suffered physical and emotional trauma, with the lorry driver expressing anxiety and retreating from social activities due to his injuries.
In court, the Redmond family faced charges of affray, with the father receiving a suspended prison sentence and the sons being handed community orders. They were also instructed to pay compensation to one of the victims. The judge condemned their actions, labeling the event as disgraceful and emphasizing the need for accountability and remorse from the defendants.
