British Expat in Spain Considers Portugal Escape

A British expatriate residing in Spain has shared her poignant reasons for refraining from returning to the UK amidst the escalating threat of wildfires and scorching temperatures enveloping the country she has made her home for the past three years.

Barbara, a former accountant aged 72, relocated to Granada, Spain, seeking warmer climates and heightened sunshine after departing from London. However, she now laments her decision due to the extreme heat trapping her indoors in her rented accommodation.

The oppressive temperatures have driven Barbara to contemplate a move to Portugal in a bid to evade the blistering heatwaves and wildfire risks, rather than considering a return to the UK, where although facing its wildfire dangers, does not endure the severe conditions currently gripping Spain and France.

Expressing her reluctance to return to the UK, Barbara conveyed to the i newspaper, “Going back to the UK is not an option. I have no family. My husband passed away six years ago, along with most of my closest friends.” She mentioned considering Portugal, where summers are described as pleasant and bearably hot with a refreshing sea breeze, planning a visit to Lisbon in November to explore rental housing options.

Barbara disclosed her deep regret over moving to Granada, labeling it the “biggest regret” of her life, while also expressing fear over the looming threat of devastating fires ravaging the European continent.

The intensity of the wildfires sweeping through Spain, France, and other European nations has raised alarm, with suggestions linking them in part to climate change. The soaring temperatures reaching the high thirties and early forties have strained ecosystems and inhabitants, exacerbating the wildfire risks.

Discussing the issue with the Guardian, Dr. Clair Barnes, a research associate at Imperial College London, highlighted the role of climate change in fueling these dangerous phenomena, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the escalating impacts of global warming in real-time.
