A popular social media figure from Mexico met a tragic end when he was fatally shot during a live stream in broad daylight. Cesar Gastelum, known for his comedic content on TikTok with a following of 600,000, was broadcasting outside a fast-food establishment in Culiacan when the fatal incident occurred. Two individuals on a motorcycle, both wearing helmets, approached Gastelum and his companions and indiscriminately opened fire, with one of them aiming directly at Gastelum’s head as captured in the live stream recording.
Located in Sinaloa, Culiacan is notorious for being a hub of drug cartel operations in Mexico, specifically the Sinaloa Cartel. The region has been plagued by escalating violence fueled by rival factions within the cartel. Following the abduction of Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in 2024 by a son of former cartel head Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, violence erupted in Sinaloa. Zambada was eventually handed over to US authorities, leading to a conflict between his faction of the cartel and the faction led by Guzmán’s sons.
The situation escalated to the point where US President Donald Trump classified the Sinaloa Cartel and other groups as foreign terrorist organizations. The tragic killing of influencer Cesar Gastelum bears resemblance to the 2025 murder of beauty influencer Valeria Marquez, who was also shot to death during a TikTok live stream at her workplace in Zapopan, Jalisco.
Marquez’s assailant entered the salon and opened fire, resulting in her untimely death. In a separate event, authorities in Jalisco announced the arrest of Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1,” identified as the leader of a criminal group associated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Alvarez Ayala has been linked to Marquez’s murder and is accused of orchestrating the assassination of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo in November 2025.
