A man in Florida, identified as James Westervelt, confessed to police that he took pleasure in using a leaf blower to torment his own infant son before the child’s tragic death at six months old. Westervelt, aged 38, admitted to finding amusement in using the powerful gardening tool on his son, with incidents dating back to when the child was just two months old. The previous episode of using the leaf blower on the infant caused significant distress and breathing difficulties for the child.
The unnamed boy passed away in August 2024 after being hospitalized and placed on life support due to blunt force trauma. Medical professionals indicated that the baby likely suffered injuries from being bounced excessively, possibly inflicted by his father using the leaf blower. Additionally, police revealed that they have obtained footage showing Westervelt recklessly directing air at the boy in another instance before the fatal incident.
Consequently, Westervelt now faces a first-degree murder charge in addition to existing child abuse charges for the death of his son. This development comes shortly after another tragic event where a toddler lost his life after being left unattended in a scalding bath by his mother’s boyfriend, who prioritized picking up drugs over seeking medical help for the severely burned child. The incident occurred in September 2023, resulting in the death of one-year-old Henry Wheatley-Brown under the care of Sergio Mena, 34, while Samantha Garver, 36, was away.
Mena, responsible for bathing the child, left Henry unattended in the hot bath to acquire methamphetamine, returning to find the boy in distress from severe burns. Despite the critical injuries, neither Mena nor Garver sought immediate medical attention but instead attempted to treat the burns with over-the-counter ointment. Emergency services were eventually called the following day when Henry displayed signs of shallow breathing.
