After experiencing dry conditions throughout July, many regions are now officially facing drought. The country has already encountered four heatwaves in 2026, leading to wildfires in various areas. However, a shift in weather patterns is expected, with forecasts indicating the arrival of heavy rain in certain regions.
An approaching low-pressure system is set to bring heavy rain to the northern parts of the UK, along with showers in the south. This system will also reintroduce warmer and more humid conditions to England and Wales, potentially surpassing 30C in some areas. Thunderstorms are expected, with Northern Ireland, Cumbria, the Northeast of England, and Scotland likely to experience heavy showers and flashes of thunder.
As the day progresses, the rain will move southwards, affecting regions like north Wales, the Northwest of England, the Midlands, and extending as far south as Devon and Hampshire. Thunderstorms are forecasted to continue into the afternoon, with Cumbria, Scotland, Berkshire, Birmingham, and Belfast possibly being impacted.
Currently, no official weather warnings for rain or thunderstorms are in effect. The Met Office Chief Forecaster, Chris Bulmer, anticipates a change in weather conditions, with warmer temperatures returning alongside the possibility of showers or thunderstorms in some regions. While the south may receive minimal rainfall, the north could face heavy rain, especially in Scotland.
The UK Health Security Agency has issued heat alerts for several areas from August 2 to August 5. Despite experiencing record-breaking temperatures and multiple heatwaves, upcoming weather maps suggest a shift towards wetter conditions across England, the North, the Midlands, and parts of Wales. Temperatures are expected to moderate, ranging in the mid-teens in some areas.
Looking ahead to August 10, significant rainfall is anticipated across various regions, offering relief from the prolonged dry spell. The weather forecast points to a mix of wet and cooler conditions, particularly in northern and central parts of the UK.
