Funeral Director’s Fraud Exposed: Assets Seized in £3M Scandal

The bank accounts of funeral director Robert Bush have been frozen and his assets confiscated by prosecutors in an effort to recover funds he fraudulently obtained from multiple victims. Bush, who misled grieving families with incorrect ashes and hoarded the bodies of 35 individuals, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his deceitful actions at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors over more than a decade. During his recent trial, it was revealed that he spent substantial amounts of money on luxury holidays, motorcycle racing, and home improvements, all funded by the money he swindled from bereaved families between 2017 and 2024.

Prosecutors disclosed that over seven years, a total of £3,076,522 flowed into Bush’s personal and business accounts, exposing his lavish spending habits and financial mismanagement. The Crown Prosecution Service aims to reimburse as many victims as possible by seizing control of Bush’s accounts and assets. Laura Tams KC, deputy chief crown prosecutor at the CPS, emphasized the importance of holding Bush accountable for his crimes and ensuring justice for the affected families.

Bush’s extravagant spending included trips to various destinations, jewelry purchases, fine dining experiences, and theater outings, all while neglecting his responsibilities to those he was entrusted to serve. Despite claiming financial difficulties, Bush was found to have withdrawn significant amounts annually for personal use, diverting funds to his wife as well. The prosecutor highlighted the disparity between Bush’s lavish lifestyle and his obligations to provide dignified services to the deceased and their families.

One victim described Bush’s transformation from a respected professional to a deceitful individual preying on vulnerable families, expressing hope for justice to be served. The impact of Bush’s actions on numerous families was emphasized, with concerns raised about the authenticity of the ashes provided to loved ones. The victim urged vigilance against similar fraudulent practices in the funeral industry, urging transparency and accountability in such sensitive matters.
