King Charles, the monarch, attended the Mey Highland Games in Scotland where he enjoyed a local favorite whisky. Dressed in a traditional kilt, he engaged with spectators and participants at the annual Caithness event. Since 2002, King Charles has held the title of Chieftain at the games, succeeding his late mother, the Queen.
During the event, the King witnessed athletes competing in traditional sports like tug o’ war and caber tossing. Various groups, including the Wounded Highlanders, a team of injured military veterans, also had the opportunity to meet with King Charles. Additionally, Highland dancers and pipe bands showcased their talents at the games.
The Mey Highland Games, held annually at the John O’Groats showground on the first Saturday of August, originated in 1970 to celebrate the late Queen Mother’s 70th birthday. Over the years, the event has grown significantly, attracting around 2,000 attendees.
While King Charles attended the Mey Highland Games, his son William, known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland, was present at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with his family. Last year, the King introduced a special edition whisky priced at £3,200 per bottle to commemorate his 75th birthday. This exclusive Balmoral whisky, distilled in 1978 and tasted by the King himself, features a unique presentation in wooden cases made from Balmoral Estate materials. Additionally, the packaging incorporates eco-friendly seaweed paper developed by Notpla, an Earthshot Prize-winning company supported by Prince William.
