At present, there is a critical juncture where conservative politicians are aiming to reverse the progress made in women’s rights, while online discussions are veering towards a negative path that does not align with British values.
I am resolute in my stance against this regression and pledge to drive the country forward in my new capacity. Whether it involves reducing child poverty, combatting violence against women and girls, or advocating for pay equality, I am fully dedicated to these causes.
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting a rape crisis center where dedicated staff provide vital support to women seeking safety, security, and healing from significant trauma.
Our manifesto commits to halving violence against women and girls, a commitment that I will prioritize in my work.
This mission is deeply personal for me, as I previously managed a shelter for women and children escaping abuse before entering politics.
I have witnessed firsthand that rights are not theoretical concepts but tangible safeguards in people’s daily lives. They include a woman’s ability to walk home safely at night, a disabled person’s access to public transportation, and workers’ right to equal pay for equal work, a victory secured through the efforts of trade unions.
As the legislative arm of the labor movement, it has been the responsibility of the Labour Party to secure these advancements, which we have achieved through legislation such as the Equal Pay Act 1970, the Sex Discrimination Act 1970, the Equality Act 2010, and the Employment Rights Act 2025.
However, there are voices, like Nigel Farage, who seek to dismantle these laws, jeopardizing protections for women, ethnic minorities, and individuals with disabilities, and eradicating barriers to discrimination based on religious beliefs or sexual orientation.
Farage’s track record on these issues is concerning, as seen in his problematic statements supporting figures like Andrew Tate and questioning the necessity of maternity leave for women.
When right-wing politicians challenge equality laws, we must remember that these laws safeguard essential rights, including maternity rights, disability rights, and the hard-fought gains of working-class individuals that drive societal progress.
As the Minister for Women and Equalities, I will not allow Reform UK to reverse progress. I am committed not only to defending these rights but also to enhancing them further.
In addition to my ministerial role, I have taken on the position of Chair of the Labour Party, where I will engage with people nationwide, including readers of the Mirror, to understand their expectations from the government.
My journey with the Labour Party began in my youth, witnessing the impact of Conservative policies in the North East. Over time, I have seen the positive changes that Labour brings, including stronger workplace rights, improved healthcare through the NHS, and enhanced opportunities for children.
My aim is to rejuvenate the party, starting with recent successes in Greater Manchester against Reform and the Greens.
While we face formidable challenges, I am dedicated to collaborating with party members and unions to build a winning strategy that thwarts divisive politics and secures a second term for Labour.
Andy Burnham has made a strong start as Prime Minister, demonstrating his willingness to challenge the status quo and instill hope in the populace.
Many have resigned to the decline of our nation as inevitable, accepting issues like homelessness, unaffordable public transport, and closure of local establishments. Labour seeks to defy these notions.
As summer holidays are in full swing, I hope everyone is enjoying a well-deserved break. Labour’s efforts to reduce VAT on children’s activities and meals aim to provide families with financial relief.
Upon the return to school, we anticipate lower uniform costs, expanded free breakfast clubs, and increased access to free school meals for half a million more children.
