A renowned mountaineer and ex-Royal Marines soldier passed away in Pakistan following an avalanche incident. The company co-founded by Nirmal Purja confirmed the tragic news, stating that the Nepalese climber was leading a group of 10 climbers on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th highest mountain, when the avalanche hit on Thursday noon.
After extensive search operations, Elite Exped, Purja’s company, officially announced his demise. In a heartfelt Instagram post, the company expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja and other expedition members. The post conveyed condolences to their families, urging privacy during this grieving period.
Pakistani authorities recovered the bodies of three climbers, including Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal, along with American Mallory Geis and Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy from Oman. Nepal’s Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, also confirmed Purja’s death, acknowledging the tragic loss of six Nepalese and four foreign climbers in the Karakoram mountain range.
Tributes poured in from various personalities, including British adventurer Bear Grylls, who honored Purja’s memory for his remarkable achievements. Purja gained global recognition in 2019 for conquering all 14 mountains with peaks above 8,000 meters in record time, a feat documented in the Netflix series “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”
Aside from his mountaineering prowess, Purja served in the British military, receiving accolades for his exceptional contributions. Known for his courage and dedication, his legacy in the climbing community remains an enduring source of inspiration.
