Heat health alerts have been raised to amber across significant parts of the nation as the UK prepares for its fourth heatwave of the year. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber heat health alerts for the East Midlands, East of England, London, and the South East regions, with yellow heat health alerts in place for the South West, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and The Humber.
These alerts will remain effective from 9 am on Wednesday, July 29, until 9 am on Thursday, July 30. Notably, there are currently no alerts issued for the North East, North West of England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland.
According to the agency, an amber alert indicates that significant impacts are probable on health and social care services due to the high temperatures, leading to an increase in fatalities, especially among individuals aged 65 and above or those with existing health conditions. There could also be adverse effects on the health of younger age groups.
The alert highlights that the extreme heat may impede the delivery of services by staff and that temperatures within care facilities such as hospitals and care homes could surpass recommended thresholds for clinical risk assessment.
Moreover, staffing challenges may escalate due to external factors like transport disruptions. The demand for electricity might exceed capacity, while various sectors like travel could encounter disturbances.
The agency has also cautioned about a rise in water-related incidents, including risks associated with cold water shock and drowning.
