Participants in the camps engage in various scenarios, including simulated kidnappings and encounters with masked individuals, to simulate real-life threats. The training also covers topics like telephone scams, hate crimes, racism, and interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
One student shared that while they hope to never use the skills learned in the camp, they feel more vigilant and prepared after the training. Despite apprehensions, the US remains a popular choice for Chinese students pursuing education abroad, followed by the UK and Australia. The number of Chinese students attending American universities has slightly decreased in recent years.
While Chinese universities have made significant strides, Western degrees still hold prestige, and studying abroad offers opportunities to enhance English proficiency and experience greater academic freedom. However, concerns about safety and inequality in American cities, exacerbated by reports of Chinese scholars facing deportation and other challenges, have raised parental worries.
Chinese authorities provide pre-study training for government-sponsored programs, and a travel warning has been issued for students heading to the US due to potential hostility from immigration officials. The private “ICE camps” go beyond traditional preparations, offering practical exercises tailored to students’ potential experiences while living overseas.
Amid the pandemic, the number of Chinese students coming to the UK has remained steady, as some parents opt for the UK over the US due to safety concerns.
