A devastating “fire tornado” has ravaged a popular vacation destination, leading to the evacuation of 10,000 individuals from the path of the fierce blaze. The wildfire in the Saumos commune in the Gironde department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine has consumed over 2,000 hectares of land.
Authorities have cleared out the tourist hub of Arcachon Bay as the fire posed a threat to residences and businesses in the vicinity. Among those displaced are holidaymakers lodged at neighboring campsites, as the fire edges closer to the renowned area.
In a forest near Lège-Cap-Ferret, southwest of Bordeaux, a wildfire has spread over 31 square kilometers (12 square miles), according to local officials. Despite the extensive impact of the fire, there have been no reports of injuries.
Sophie Brocas, the prefect of the Gironde region, disclosed that approximately 700 firefighters, including reinforcements from the Paris region, have been deployed to combat the blaze. The flames neared the town of Lège, with the fire’s edge advancing to within 300 meters (980 feet) of homes on the outskirts of the settlement.
The recent catastrophe follows persistent heatwaves that desiccated local forests, rendering them susceptible to ignition. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez revealed a staggering 12,500 wildfires have erupted across France this year, destroying nearly 44,000 hectares of land.
