A new medication is now available through the NHS to assist individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) in improving their walking ability.
The drug fampridine, considered a “life-changing” treatment, acts as a nerve signal enhancer for MS patients, aiding in the more efficient transmission of electrical messages to the muscles. Approximately 5,000 patients in England will have access to this twice-daily pill, a significant advancement from previous treatment options such as physiotherapy or assistive walking devices.
Ceri Smith, the head of policy and evidence at the MS Society, expressed satisfaction with the NHS approval of fampridine. She highlighted the positive impact of the drug on enhancing walking ability and speed for individuals with MS, leading to increased independence and potential for remaining employed.
Multiple sclerosis is an incurable autoimmune condition affecting the central nervous system, with symptoms ranging from fatigue and dizziness to muscle cramps and vision issues. Fampridine, priced at around £4,700 per patient annually, has been made accessible through negotiated discounts by the NHS.
NHS national medical director, Professor Frankie Swords, emphasized the significance of fampridine in addressing mobility challenges faced by MS patients. The pill aids in the transmission of nerve signals damaged by MS, enabling easier walking and improved mobility for daily activities.
Patients with MS, rated between four to seven on the disability scale, will be offered fampridine to enhance their walking ability. Trial results indicated that the drug improved walking speed for 43% of patients and extended the duration of walking.
Aysen Slack, a former private user of fampridine, expressed her desire to access the medication through the NHS due to its positive impact on her mobility. She highlighted the financial burden of private use and the potential life-changing benefits of the drug.
Ceri Smith stressed the importance of ensuring widespread access to fampridine for all MS patients in need, regardless of their location in England.
