UK authorities have intercepted a shipment of 25 inflatable boats and engines, capable of transporting around 2,000 people across the Channel, as part of an operation targeting smuggling gangs. The seizure, made at Felixstowe port, dealt a significant blow to criminal networks facilitating dangerous Channel crossings.
Each of the 10-meter-long boats found in the container bound for Germany could carry up to 80 individuals on the perilous journey. This marks the first time a large consignment of boats and engines has been confiscated in the UK. The National Crime Agency (NCA) revealed that the intended destination for the seized container was Hamburg, a known hub for human traffickers.
The thwarted plan involved transporting the boats to northern France or Belgium for illicit Channel crossings. The UK government has committed to dismantling the smuggling operations responsible for the influx of small boats landing on British shores.
Since 2023, the NCA and its global partners have intercepted over 1,500 boats and engines as part of ongoing efforts to combat criminal gangs. Border Security Commander Duncan Capps commended the joint effort of the NCA, Home Office intelligence teams, and Border Force officers in disrupting criminal activities related to Channel crossings.
Individuals involved in smuggling such flimsy small boat equipment will face legal consequences, stated NCA Branch Commander Adam Berry. The seizure of this significant amount of small boat equipment will not only dent the criminal network’s profits but also prevent the use of unsafe vessels and underpowered engines in potentially life-threatening Channel crossings.
The interception, coordinated with Border Force, halted the progression of the shipment, illustrating a strategic approach to disrupting people smuggling networks. Investigations into such criminal activities are ongoing as part of broader efforts to combat organized immigration crime.
