The uncle of a man suspected in the murder case involving Ann Widdecombe expressed shock upon learning about the arrest. The 28-year-old suspect was apprehended by armed police at his residence in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The uncle, aged 73, shared his disbelief, stating that he never expected such actions from his nephew.
Ann Widdecombe, a former Tory minister and current Reform UK spokesperson, was reportedly assaulted at her residence in Haytor Vale on the outskirts of Dartmoor, Devon. Her body was found the following day with severe injuries. The suspect, a white British man, was arrested on suspicion of murder and potential terrorism-related activities. Counter-terrorism authorities described the incident as a “targeted attack” and are investigating the motive behind it.
The suspect’s uncle, who lives nearby and had not seen him in a decade, described him as a quiet and polite individual. The suspect had been residing with his father until the latter’s recent passing. A neighbor mentioned that the suspect rarely ventured out since his father’s death and now lives with a family member’s dog.
Authorities initially ruled out terrorism in the case, stating that there was no indication of political motivation. The man from Rotherham was initially detained for murder and later re-arrested on terrorism-related suspicions. The incident has sparked discussions on the safety of Members of Parliament, with Widdecombe being a former MP for Maidstone, Kent, and a spokesperson for Reform UK.
