“Trump Commends Iran for Releasing American Detainee Amid Tensions”

US President Donald Trump has commended Iran for releasing an American citizen who had been detained for over a year and a half, referring to it as a “gesture of goodwill.” This positive acknowledgment comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations.

The conflict between the US and Iran has been sporadic since February 28, triggered by joint strikes conducted by the US and Israel on key Iranian sites. In response, Iran retaliated by targeting various locations across the region and blocking the critical Strait of Hormuz waterway.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed gratitude for Iran’s decision to allow the American citizen, who was detained in December 2024 during Joe Biden’s presidency, to leave the country unharmed. He confirmed that the individual is now safe and in good health outside of Iran.

Despite this diplomatic move, the US carried out strikes on Iranian facilities, including command centers, air defense sites, and missile capabilities. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported precision strikes on multiple locations, emphasizing the aim to diminish Iran’s ability to threaten commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed a month ago to end the conflict within 60 days, both nations have failed to achieve lasting peace and secure navigation through the vital waterway. Iran recently announced its withdrawal from the MoU due to alleged American violations, asserting full sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, including control over Oman’s share.

During a NATO summit in Türkiye, President Trump declared an end to the ceasefire, expressing his disinterest in further negotiations with Iran and harshly referring to them as “scum.”
