“Heroic Pilot Sully Battling Alzheimer’s: A New Challenge”

An airline pilot, known worldwide for his successful emergency landing on New York’s Hudson River in 2009, has recently disclosed his ongoing battle with a hidden health issue that was diagnosed almost a year ago. Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III gained fame for his heroic actions when a flock of geese caused both engines of US Airways Flight 1549 to fail shortly after takeoff 17 years ago. This event, famously termed “The Miracle on the Hudson,” saved all 155 passengers and crew on board and was later adapted into a movie directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks.

Despite his past heroism, Captain Sully has faced a new challenge. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 75-year-old hero revealed that he has been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease since August 2025. Sullenberger shared that despite his photographic memory, he has had difficulties recalling recent details and stories. Alzheimer’s disease affects millions globally and can impact individuals of any age group. His first officer on Flight 1549, Jeff Skiles, expressed admiration for Sully and hopes for his ability to navigate this new phase with grace.

Medical experts suggest that the stress from the Hudson River incident may have contributed to Sullenberger’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The pilot’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from the event could have increased his risk of developing Alzheimer’s due to changes in brain chemistry and structure. Despite the challenging diagnosis, Captain Sully remains optimistic, aiming to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and help others facing similar struggles. He emphasized the importance of speaking up and finding hope in difficult situations, with the support of his partner and family.

Alzheimer’s disease, the leading cause of dementia, progressively impairs memory and cognitive functions. While there is no cure, treatments can slow its progression, and lifestyle adjustments like mental and physical activities can be beneficial. Psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Amen suggests various factors to fortify against Alzheimer’s, including promoting blood flow, reducing inflammation, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Staying informed about hereditary risks, hormonal balance, and mental stimulation can also aid in combating memory diseases.

Captain Sully, now a National Aviation Hall of Fame inductee, urges unity in facing Alzheimer’s together, echoing the courage displayed during the Miracle on the Hudson. His dedication to raising awareness and his resilience in confronting the disease inspire hope for many.
