Police in South Wales have provided an update on an incident where a man carrying a crossbow was shot by armed officers following reports of threatening behavior. The individual was discovered with the weapon when law enforcement responded to a residence on St Edward Street late on Friday night. Authorities confirmed that a 21-year-old was shot with a police-issued firearm at the scene and received immediate medical attention before being transported to the hospital. The man is reported to be in stable condition. A referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been initiated in response to the shooting. The man, a resident of Newport, has been arrested on charges of affray, threats to kill, and possession of an offensive weapon. Currently, he is in police custody at the hospital as investigations proceed.
Deputy chief constable Nicholas McLain sought to reassure the public, emphasizing that the incident was isolated with no ongoing risk to the wider community. Firearms-related incidents are uncommon in Gwent, but are treated with utmost seriousness by the authorities. The discharge of a police firearm is considered a last resort and is only employed when there is a significant threat to officers, the individual in question, or the public. McLain acknowledged the challenging nature of the work carried out by firearms officers, praising their professionalism and dedication to public safety.
