“MPs Push for Stricter Rules on Campaign Spending & Donations”

Ministers have been cautioned about the urgent need for stricter regulations on campaign spending and donations to address the escalating political competition. Members of Parliament are set to propose measures such as donor caps, a prohibition on second jobs for members, and legislation to prevent companies that financially support ruling parties from securing government contracts. These initiatives are in response to a report revealing that the majority of voters believe affluent individuals are leveraging donations to further their personal agendas.

Former Labour chair, Dame Anneliese Dodds, emphasized the necessity for immediate action, criticizing the existing rules that allow for an uncontrolled increase in political influence. She highlighted the diminishing trust in political institutions and the growing impact of monetary interests on elections, urging politicians to unite in safeguarding public interests. Dame Anneliese has presented an amendment to reduce the national campaign spending cap by £10 million in the government’s Representation of the People Bill.

The call for reform resonates in a report by the Autonomy Institute, advocating for a £20,000 limit on political donations to enhance transparency in politics. Dr. Will Stronge, the institute’s chief executive, stressed the widespread public support for donation caps to curtail the disproportionate influence of wealthy donors in politics. Labour backbencher Neil Duncan-Jordan echoed these sentiments, underscoring the need to level the playing field by restricting donations and mitigating the sway of affluent contributors.

Recent data reveals substantial donations to political parties, with Reform UK receiving over £5.4 million in the last quarter, including a significant contribution from a crypto tycoon. The Tories received £2.4 million during the same period, while Labour garnered £1.9 million from donors. Proposed amendments to the Representation of the People Bill aim to reinforce regulations on political donations, fortifying defenses against foreign interference in British politics and empowering the Electoral Commission to enforce donation rules effectively.

Multiple MPs have lent their support to various amendments, including calls for stricter restrictions on public contracts for political donors. These initiatives are gaining traction across party lines, signaling a growing consensus on the need for comprehensive reforms to uphold the integrity of the political process.
