A Ryanair flight had to make an emergency landing after nearly running out of fuel mid-air. The flight, FR5448, departed from Sevilla, Spain, en route to Nantes, France. While approaching Nantes Atlantique Airport, the plane had to abort its landing due to a runway blockage caused by another aircraft’s engine failure during takeoff.
The affected flight bound for Madrid had one engine shut down shortly after takeoff, likely due to debris from a burst tire. After landing back on the runway, the aircraft had to be inspected for debris. The pilots then executed a go-around maneuver to reposition the plane for a safe landing or diversion to an alternate airport.
As the aircraft circled in a holding pattern at 4,000 feet, air traffic control directed the plane to Brest due to diminishing fuel reserves. The captain declared a fuel emergency, prompting a quick climb to 20,000 feet for a priority landing at Brest airport. The plane landed safely at Brest after 2 hours and 40 minutes in the air.
The runway closure at Nantes Airport led to flight diversions, causing a temporary halt in flight operations for about four hours. Debris from the engine failure was found on the runway, and normal flight operations resumed around 11 pm. Ryanair confirmed the diversion to Brest, stating that the passengers eventually departed for Nantes at 23:10 local time.
Experts cleared the runway for debris by 10:30 pm, allowing operations to resume. Ryanair assured that all safety protocols were followed during the incident, ensuring the passengers’ well-being and compliance with regulations.
