“Convicted Killer Seeks DNA Test for New Suspect”

A man convicted of the murders of Lin Russell and her daughter Megan is undergoing a new DNA test to potentially identify another suspect and prove his innocence. Michael Stone, 66, currently serving life sentences, will have his saliva sampled as part of this process coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the 1996 murders.

Stone has been requesting new DNA tests due to advancements in forensic techniques, especially in isolating male DNA from mixed samples. The potential discovery of new male DNA could lead to a comparison with serial killer Levi Bellfield, who previously claimed responsibility for the murders.

Recent forensic strategies, including the examination of bloodstained evidence like a plimsoll lace used in the crime, are being explored. Samples from the victims’ bodies and other key items, such as a plastic lunchbox with a bloody fingerprint, are being reexamined for DNA evidence.

Stone, who has maintained his innocence, hopes that the new DNA tests will reveal another suspect in the case. The investigation will utilize advanced DNA testing methods like DNA-17 and Y-STR to analyze genetic material and potentially identify a new perpetrator if male DNA unrelated to Stone or Lin Russell’s husband is detected.

Stone’s legal team emphasizes his long-standing push for further forensic analysis, highlighting his commitment to proving his innocence. The Criminal Cases Review Commission will oversee the investigation, aiming to uncover new evidence that could lead to a breakthrough in the case.
