A mother raised concerns about her daughter’s health after noticing unusual symptoms that led to the discovery of a substantial tumor in her throat. Cheryl Barber became worried when her 11-year-old daughter, Tamelia Felway, started experiencing fatigue and body aches in September 2022, causing her to quit dance classes and exhibit changes in weight and mood. Seeking medical advice from their GP, Cheryl was initially told that these symptoms were normal for a growing child. However, in September 2024, a lump on Tamelia’s throat prompted further investigation, eventually leading to the removal of the tumor.
Subsequent tests at Great Ormond Street Hospital revealed that Tamelia had thyroid cancer in November 2025, prompting her to start radiotherapy in May 2026. Cheryl emphasized the importance of trusting parental instincts in navigating the diagnostic process and has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the family during hospital visits while caring for her two-year-old daughter, Lily.
Describing the ordeal, Cheryl recalled how Tamelia’s energy levels plummeted, resulting in her giving up dancing due to exhaustion. The sudden weight gain and the discovery of a noticeable lump in Tamelia’s throat triggered alarm bells for Cheryl, leading to the cancer diagnosis. Despite facing uncertainties about the cancer’s stage, the GoFundMe initiative has garnered over £3,200 in donations.
Reflecting on the delayed diagnosis, Cheryl expressed frustration at the lack of early detection and urged parents to be proactive in advocating for their children’s health. Highlighting the importance of gut instincts, Cheryl emphasized the need for swift action when facing potential health concerns.
Thyroid cancer primarily affects the thyroid gland located in the neck’s lower front region. Common symptoms include neck lumps, hoarseness, sore throat, and swallowing or breathing difficulties. Treatment typically involves surgical procedures along with hormone therapy, radioactive iodine treatment, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy to manage the condition.
