UK Heatwave Set to Soar: Temperatures to Hit 34C

Temperatures are expected to rise significantly up to 34C as the heatwave makes a comeback, heating up various parts of the UK in the upcoming week.

According to the Met Office, temperatures are set to climb to 29C on Sunday and then soar into the lower 30s during the following week, peaking at 34C on Thursday and Friday in the South East region. Although it will be a prolonged period of hot weather in certain areas of the UK, meteorologists predict that it will not be as scorching and muggy as the previous month’s heatwave.

Concerns have been raised by health authorities about the potential increased risk to vulnerable individuals due to the rising temperatures. A week-long alert has been issued, with yellow heat health warnings from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) covering several regions in England. These alerts are in effect from midday on Saturday until 8pm on July 11, encompassing the East Midlands, East, South-East, South-West, including London, and the West Midlands.

Southern Water has implemented a hosepipe ban starting at 12.01 am on July 10 in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to safeguard local rivers that supply the majority of water, such as the River Test and Itchen. Exceptions are made for customers with medical requirements who are on the priority services register, including blue badge holders and those on the WaterSure tariff. Southern Water urges all users to minimize hosepipe usage to support water conservation efforts.

The UKHSA anticipates minor disruptions across health and social care services within the alert area, including a potential increase in healthcare service utilization among vulnerable groups and a higher risk of water-related incidents like cold water shock and drowning.

Meteorologist Becky Mitchell from the Met Office mentioned that a heatwave is approaching parts of southern England and Wales, with temperatures already climbing notably in the South East, possibly reaching 28C in London. Other regions will experience temperatures closer to average but are expected to rise in the coming week. Northern areas may see cloudier conditions and occasional rain, creating a north/south weather divide.

Tomorrow, the southern regions could reach highs of 29C, with temperatures approaching the low 30s at the beginning of the next week. The peak of the heatwave is forecasted for Thursday or Friday, with temperatures reaching 34C in the South East. Compared to the June heatwave, this upcoming hot spell is projected to be less intense but will still persist for about a week.
